Exhibit 00 · Prehistory
In the Merrie Melodies short "Wabbit Twouble", Bugs Bunny mocks Elmer Fudd by puffing himself up into a sphere. The frame sits unremarked in the archive for seventy-seven years. Every artifact in this museum descends from that single cel.
Exhibit 01 · The Forgery
A Photoshopped PlayStation 4 box cover appears on Reddit, posted by u/GaryTheTaco: the round rabbit, one word (BIG CHUNGUS), an ADULTS ONLY rating and a "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" sticker. A joke about nothing, executed with the confidence of an official product. The internet decides, collectively and without a vote, that it is real.
Exhibit 02 · First Contact
A GameStop employee posts that a customer's mother came in asking to buy "Big Chungus for the PS4"; her son had shown her the cover. The post detonates. Across the country, people begin phoning GameStop stores, deadpan, asking to reserve a copy.
Exhibit 03 · Canonization
Employees print display cases and slide them into the New Releases shelf. PowerUp Rewards points are offered on a game that cannot be sold. The forgery has become inventory. This is the moment the joke stops being a picture and becomes a place.
Exhibit 04 · The Crossover
Two years later the same retailer is the center of the largest retail-investor event in market history. r/wallstreetbets, diamond hands, a stock that opens the month at $17 and touches $483. The rabbit's store becomes the people's absurdity a second time, this time with SEC filings.
Exhibit 05 · Preservation
Memes decay faster than film stock. Servers close, threads are deleted, screenshots compress into soup. This archive exists to hold the artifacts of the Big Chungus event (the forgery, the stores, the squeeze) at museum grade, before the internet forgets it invented them.
